The River Stour in flood in 1947 with hire boats overturned by the force of the current. Note that the pre-war parapet had not yet been replaced – it was removed in 1940 to give a clear line of fire for the field gun in its emplacement on the opposite bank when German panzers tried to cross the bridge on route to London.
