The previous bridge over the Stour was built in 1911 and unable to ope with the weight of 42 tonne articulated lorries. Construction of the new bridge was begun on 2002 and completed the following year. Half the bridge was closed at a time to allow traffic to continue on the A131 – a major arterial route.
