Sudbury Workhouse 1935

Subject: Utilities and Public Services

This complex of redbrick buildings in Walnuttree Lane has now been converted into very attractive apartments but it was once the town’s Victorian workhouse. It was renamed in 1929 as the ‘Poor Law Public Assistance Institution’ and life became somewhat less severe for the inmates as this photo from 1935 suggests. After WW2 it became a NHS hospital.
