The USAAF 486th Bomb Group was based at Sudbury Airfield from April 1944 until July 1945. Many young children were attracted up to the airfield including 11- year old Ted Filer. He grew friendly with one particular aircrew commanded by Ray Garrett and painted the back of some of their flying jackets. Ray Garrett came back to Sudbury in 1996 and is seen here on the left. The flying jacket, which the young Ted painted with a B-17, is being modelled by the Mayor of Sudbury, Michael Gough, and Ted Filer is on the right. The jacket was subsequently presented to Sudbury Town Council.
