This fine timber- framed merchant’s house at 101 Cross Street probably dates back to the late 15th century. Two shopfronts were inserted in the early 20th century(?) and many former pupils of Mill Lane school will remember Mr Maskell who ran what was in effect the school tuck shop here. He retired in 1985 and the shopfronts have since disappeared in the change back to residential use. The road level was raised by Macadam in the 1840s which explains how the ground floors are sunk below the present road surface.
