The start of the walking match organised by local silk employers on Saturday 28th May 1904. They started in York Road, came past the newly built Methodist Church and into Girling Street. From there they went on into East Street and out to the ‘White Horse’ in Waldingfield thence on to the Acton ‘Crown’ and the Melford ‘Bull’ before walking back to Sudbury. There were cash prizes for the first five home and a separate category and prizes for those over 40. Walkers had to walk heel and toe; trousers were required but other attire was optional!
