Inspector Ronald Pooley of the Sudbury police who died under the wheels of a runaway ballast lorry outside The Bear PH at the Newton Road/King street junction on September 10th 1943. A legend has grown up that he died in an abortive attempt to save an elderly widow but this seems to be based on a tribute poem published at the time and there is nothing in the inquest report to support the legend.
