Workmen in a very precarious position at the top of the fleche or spirelet that used to grace the tower of St Peter’s church. It had a wooden framework covered in copper sheeting and was topped by a cockerel weather vane. The fleche was removed in 1968 because it was deemed unsafe; this picture may date from then or perhaps from an earlier attempt at repair. The weather vane is now high up on a ledge in the Heritage Centre- there is also an image of it in our Virtual Museum.
