The entrance to Friars Street seen from Market Hill on Tuesday 10th March 1863. One of four recently discovered images of the town and the earliest we have found to date. The town was decked with ceremonial arches, flags and lights to celebrate the marriage of Albert, Prince of Wales and future Edward VII, to the Danish princess, Alexandra. The banner reads ‘Welcome Albert and Alexandra, England’s Hope and Future Glory.’ ‘Messrs Ready, clothiers, hatters, woollen drapers, and boot & shoe manufacturers’ on the right. Note the ghostly images of people on the right who were moving too quickly for the time exposure to fix their images.
