The Sudbury Fire Station was at Chilton Hill House during WWII. Here Alf Heard sits on the fire service Panther motor cycle, with his son, Peter, on the tank. As a dispatch rider Alf rode both the solo Panther and the Indian sidecar outfits and, as well as being a normal crewman, he looked after the Station Canteen Van and kept it stocked. Peter remembers frequent callouts to aircraft crashes and to deal with fires at the local USAAF rubbish dumps – with ammunition in them this meant danger from explosions and ricochets!
