An idyllic view of the town from across the Stour Valley painted by James Scales c1821/2 and seen here in a print which hangs in The Granary tearoom at the Quay. The Quay warehouses are clearly visible on the cut off the main river. The three churches stand above the roof tops and, beyond, the two windmills which once stood on opposite sides of North Street. No railway along the valley yet.
