A pre-WW1 view of the bridge taken looking downstream along ‘The Reach’ from the vicinity of Friars Meadow. The photo brings out the meandering nature of the old river course, often the cause of flooding in the low-lying parts of the town. The channel was straightened and meanders cut through after WW2. Before that I the bridge led directly onto the Essex bank, not as today onto an island.
