River Stour Navigation

Subject: Transport

Gallery: Up to 1970

Catalogue ref: pa1149

One of two Victorian photographs showing lighters moored on the river loaded with coconuts. These were brought up river for the matting factories in Sudbury, Long Melford and Glemsford. We need more information – were these whole nuts and if so what was done with the inside flesh and milk? Was Ballingdon bridge the head of navigation or could the lighters go further up river?
