St Gregory’s is Sudbury’s ancient mother church. The bells in the tower were removed for restoration in late May, 2022, lowered down through a trap door in the bell chamber and loaded onto the back of a lorry. The refurbished bells were returned on August the 15th and ringing again on the 27th. This image is one of several showing the sequence of events – see images pa1333-1338all kindly provided by Andy Longhurst. All eight bells went onto the lorry along with the wooden wheels which are part of the ringing mechanism.
