A number of the players came from well known local families eg W.L Armes was a member of the Armes family who built the mat making factory in Cornard Road. As Captain Raymond Linay Armes he died in 1916 in an unsuccessful attempt to relieve the starving garrison of 9,000 British and Indian troops beseiged by the Turks at Kut, south east of Baghdad.
